Pharm Access Africa Limited
Pharm Access Africa Limited Pharm Access Africa Limited (PAAL) was established in 2001 with a mission to increase access to healthcare in general and medications for the treatment and prophylaxis of opportunistic infections and anti-retroviral therapy in particular. The team provided technical assistance with setting up access to anti-retroviral therapy pilot programs in the public and private sectors in Uganda right from their inception in 1996. In the initial stages, the medications were fairly highly priced and the patients paid for their anti-retrovirals. Similar work was carried out in Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
Pharm Access Africa Limited provided logistical support for the supplies of anti-retrovirals to the Coast Province General Hospital during the initial stages of the setting up of the Mombasa ART Program. The company was also involved in the setting up of and the training of staff to man the Comprehensive Care Centre teams at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, Nakuru, Naivasha District Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, Mumias. In July 2004, the company (on behalf of Family Health International) along with African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) and John Snow, Inc. (JSI) participated in an assessment of laboratories in preparation for the Presidential Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and in September 2004, we also participated in preparatory meetings for the assessment of laboratories and pharmacies in various states in Nigeria under the Global HIV/AIDS Initiative in Nigeria (GHAIN). PAAL was involved in planning and procurement of medicines during the pre - PEPFAR phase.
PAAL has, through a sub contract with Family Health International, assisted close to 50 workplaces in Kenya to develop their ART programs and have over 1000 patients that access drugs for the treatment and prophylaxis against opportunistic infections. Health care services are offered through the company hospitals, clinics or designated health care facilities. We also provide logistical support for test kits and medicines for over 160 PMTCT sites.
